Just read this and had to chuckle a little. Remember my last day in SA when I took the VW Golf to town all by myself (and got stamps for you). Well earlier that afternoon when I first got in the car and didn’t know how to reverse it (and almost rolled into that tree), I had a wonderful angel come and rescue me (won’t name any names here) and in the process of her showing me how to reverse that thing and then getting out of that position for me so I didn’t hit the tree, that is when the pedal broke! So my first experience was driving that car just as you described it. I think I reacted kinda like you. But then again we do those kind of things at home on the farm all the time! Later!

Hey Jon, how you going. Reading your posts (and I read Kristal’s too) really makes my heart ache for these people. God wants us to reach out to everybody, that includes people in Sydney, but you can’t help but feel compassion for these people who don’t even know whether they’ll have food for the next day.

I’m guessing you have email access over there? I’d like to talk to you more about it in a more lengthy email.. =)

Hi Jon,
I think that someone in SA needs a quick lesson in bushfire management. There is a simple and effective technique in these circumstances called “back burning” that can provide immediate protection. You just have to know how to do it - do it wrong (or have a wind shift in the middle of it) and the results can vary from ineffective to disastrous. You also must not be anywhere near the fire fronts when the two fronts meet- a perfect fire storm results and radiant heat is extreme for a short period of time. For the fire you had, 400 metres would be a minimum.
Suggest that they ask someone who knows to demonstrate - might save a bit of property and lives in future.
